Patients who are seeking fuller breasts may benefit from a fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, where your own fat is removed using liposuction from another part of your body (like your hips, abdomen, or thighs) and specially prepared and placed into your breasts. This can help improve the shape and contour of your breasts without the need for silicone or saline implants. The great thing about these techniques is that they can now be done with minimal scarring and performed as an outpatient procedure without the need for general anesthesia.
Results are visible soon after the procedure, but swelling will fade over time and more complete results will be noticeable after about three months. Long-term results can be expected after about six months.
Fat transfer is intended to be long-lasting, but over time some fat may be absorbed by the body. The majority of fat transfers will remain in the breast tissue, but the results may be affected by aging and weight fluctuations.
An advantage of fat transfer is that it uses your own fat cells, which can result in a more natural look and feel compared to breast implants, however there may be some variation in firmness or texture.
Fat transfer is typically used to achieve an increase of one cup size, but sometimes up to two cup sizes can be achieved. Dr. Copeland and Dr.Copeland-Halperin can provide more information about what size increase is possible during a consultation.
Breast fat transfer can be performed as an outpatient without the need for general anesthesia. Patients may experience some swelling and discomfort from the transfer site and in the breast area for a day or two.
Fat transfer is often used with other breast procedures, such as breast lift, breast implant placement, breast implant removal and revision and breast reduction. Surgical options may be discussed with Dr. Copeland and Dr. Copeland-Halperin during your consultation.
